The St. John’s Transportation Commission is seeking interested candidates for our Transit
Operator Training Program. The program is four (4) weeks in length and includes training in
bus driving, customer service, and operational procedures. Upon successful completion of the
Training Program, individuals will be eligible for future employment as a Transit Operator.
Our Transit Operators operate transit buses on established routes, with fixed time schedules in
high density traffic and in all weather conditions. The position requires attentiveness, good
judgment, safe driving habits, time management and an ability to deal with a diverse customer
base.
Upon being hired, new Transit Operators are considered Temporary employees. This means that
they do not have regularly scheduled shifts and are called for work on an “as needed basis”.
They must provide maximum flexibility as they will be required to work a variety of split shifts,
day or night shifts and weekend shifts. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to review

QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful candidates must have the ability to work as a member of a pro-active
customer service team; possess an ability to effectively understand, speak and write in English
as well as strong problem solving skills; graduation from high school with post-secondary course
work preferred; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. We value experience,
but we also recognize that skills come from many places. If you have a combination of

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and have at least five (5) years of driving
experience in Canada. Class 02 and 09 endorsements are deemed an asset. Applicants not
possessing these endorsements must meet the eligibility requirements. As a condition of
employment, candidates selected for the training program must successfully complete pre-
employment drug testing.
