The St. John’s Transportation Commission is looking for an Accountant to join our Finance team starting in April. This position reports to the Manager of Finance for the day-to-day operation of the accounting area, including coordinating and assisting with the preparation of financial statements and related financial reporting.
DUTIES: The Accountant is responsible for checking and verifying financial and accounting transactions for entry into the general ledger; preparing and posting journal entries and adjusting journal entries; overseeing the completeness and accuracy of general ledger accounts; preparing miscellaneous expense requests and related payments; preparing receipts of payments, receivable invoices and cash deposits; monitoring and reconciling credit card transactions and bank statements; reviewing and reconciling internal and external bus pass sales including e-store sales; overseeing petty cash floats involving reconciliation, documentation, and reimbursement; preparing regular electronic remittances and filings for external agencies, and regulatory and government bodies; assisting with the preparation of monthly financial statements and summaries; verifying accuracy of all general ledger entries and budget figures; assisting with the compilation and preparation of the annual budget; providing financial reports to departments for review; compiling salary and benefit expenses for departments; assisting with the preparation for the annual audit including preparation of audit schedules and reconciliations; ordering office supplies from external vendors; and performing other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a diploma in accounting/business management, supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years of practical experience in a computerized accounting environment and a strong knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures, and accounting software, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
